Anatahan

Lillie's Log

The changes in seismicity at Anatahan over the past few days have been dramatic. Two days ago (Thursday) we (Maarten, Lillie and Erik) observed extensive degassing from a single vent to the side of the dome in the East Crater. We reported our observations to Dr. Randall White of the USGS (Menlo Park), who has been monitoring the seismic activity and analyzing satellite images on a daily basis. On Saturday (24 April), we returned once again to Anatahan and the results are shown on the accompanying video. We were very excited to observe the activity and witness the gas explosions - check out the spectacular movie!

Looking for plume

Meanwhile, Dave, Alison, Jenn and Toby were on the boat doing mini-DOAS measurements of Anatahan's plume. Once the plume direction was determined, they began a series of transects across the plume. The following day, they briefly went ashore to collect some older ash and scoria. After a few hours of climbing on the rocks while listening to the frequent deep resonating rumbles of Anatahan, they headed back to the ship to prepare for their return to Saipan.
